José María Velasco Gómez

José María Velasco Gómez (July 6, 1840 – August 26, 1912) was a Mexican painter celebrated for his landscapes and detailed representations of Mexico’s geography and natural environment. Considered one of the most important Mexican artists of the nineteenth century, Velasco elevated landscape painting into a powerful expression of national identity.

Born in Temascalcingo, State of Mexico, Velasco moved with his family to Mexico City at a young age. He studied at the Academy of San Carlos under Italian landscape painter Eugenio Landesio. His training emphasized perspective, composition, and careful observation of nature, providing the foundation for his precise approach to painting.

Velasco became especially known for expansive views of the Valley of Mexico. His compositions combine mountains, vegetation, geological formations, architecture, and atmospheric skies with remarkable attention to detail. Rather than simply documenting the landscape, he presented Mexico’s natural environment as monumental and closely connected to the country’s history and identity.

His interest in science strongly influenced his work. Velasco studied geology, botany, zoology, and anatomy, applying this knowledge to his observation of the natural world. This combination of scientific precision and artistic sensitivity became a defining characteristic of his paintings.

Throughout his career, Velasco received recognition in Mexico and internationally. His work appeared in major exhibitions and international fairs, introducing audiences abroad to Mexico’s distinctive geography. He also taught at the Academy of San Carlos and influenced later generations of Mexican artists.
