Uruguay, b. 1874 – d. 1949

Joaquín Torres García (1874–1949) was an influential Uruguayan painter, sculptor, and theorist, widely recognized as a pioneer of modern art in Latin America and the founder of Constructive Universalism. His work combined geometric structure with archetypal symbols, proposing an art grounded in order, balance, and universal principles. He established the Taller Torres-García, an important workshop and educational space, and advocated for the concept of the “Escuela del Sur” (School of the South), promoting a distinct Latin American artistic identity rooted in its own cultural perspective.
